Jay Lawson, a Southern California native is a professional musician who has been performing for over 27 years. He has studied with many teachers from such greats as David Garibaldi,(Tower Of Power) and Alvin Henry. From there, his love of music brought him to P.I.T. (Percussion Institute of Technology) in 1990 where he studied with such greats as Joe Porcaro, Enzo Tedesco, and Ralph Humphrey.
In 1991 Jay found his true love to be playing island music on the Steel Pan, often referred to as the Steel Drums. In addition to his work with Urban Dread Jay is the founder and band leader for Panjive Steel Drum Entertainment. Jay has played percussion with notable music legends Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Diamond, The Coasters, The Drifters, David Garabaldi (Tower Of Power), Fishbone, 45 Grave, and the Circle Jerks.
From 1995-1997, Jay Lawson joined Bill Ward of Black Sabbath as his personal assistant and tour manager for the Black Sabbath reunion tour and the recording of the "When The Bough Breaks" and "Beyond Aston" albums. Jay also provided technical support for the Bill Ward Band.
He has performed internationally for our U.S. Military stationed overseas for 21 tours since 1995, some locations include: Bosnia, Kosovo, South Korea, Japan, Germany, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Turkey, Jordan, Panama, and Italy. Jay continues to stay on the forefront of the Steel Drum movement helping to bring peace through music and to help to introduce Southern California to island music.
